A lot has been written about the movements that seem to be gaining momentum in our nation.
I have, as I'm sure many of my progressive friends have wondered when Joe Sixpack would realize that Prayer in School is and always was optional. Did it make a difference if everyone in the room said the same prayer to the same God? Or was it possibly more important that no one would get persecuted for saying a silent prayer asking for divine guidance on the math exam?
How long would we have to wait until pro-life people would realize that in their families they had some control over the reproductive process and that it was clearly no business of theirs what went on in other families? There is no law that says you have to have an abortion. It is a choice.
Not everyone is a math major or an economist, but sooner or later the concept of giving more money to the rich and hoping the benefits would trickle down should have disproved itself in the free market.
And now, we have to deal with all of the bogeymen, made in the image of enemies, by the frightened white, soon to be a minority Americans, who have gone broke on low wages, shopping at Walmart and buying guns in order to properly represent their chosen lifestyle.
Okay, that last one was snarky. Please know, I don't think these folks are deplorable. They are frightened and confused. They are cynical and angry. They have every right to be. They were sold a bill of goods Despite this, they kept putting people into legislative positions that were bought and paid for by the stronger special interests. Those interests are not the ones that care about the disappearing middle class.
They got NAFTA, which in my opinion was in the right direction, but didn't take care of the folks it was going to hurt and rewarded the folks that were going to benefit way too much.
This same constituency sat back waved the flag and learned to dislike their neighbors when the Patriot Act was passed. We gave away almost all of our rights and then found out how it feels to live in a constant state of fear.
But lately, some things have begun to make me think that we are angry and motivated enough to actually do something about it. The MeToo Movement, Black Lives Matter, the survivors of mistreatment at the hands of a wrong-headed Olympic committee and finally Parklands Never Again young people indicate to me that a tipping point may have been found. If we can come together on the issues that affect us all. We can turn this country around to be the welcoming, nurturing, and wonderful place it is intended to be. I can only hope.
Her's a commentary on what these young people bring to the table.
