I've Made A Decision

Since Maria and are splitting up I have to relocate. Right now I have my old stand by buddies in the notorious Royal Older of Toads (ROT). My membership in the Expansion Band (2nd chair Harmonica) is still good. I write my theater and restaurant column for Appleton Monthly Magazine. My gym buddies, John and Jannet, are waiting for me to able to join them again.

My budget for an apartment is adequate for the Fox Valley. Transportation is a major problem since I no longer drive. Bus service is reasonably priced and the system is pretty good, but the frequency is not good. Crossing town with a transfer to another bus so I can make it to a Doctor's appointment is over an hour one way. The same trip in an Uber is 10-12 minutes. ($14.00 one way) I'm sure before the season is over I will be able to use my bike. Bike lanes are getting better, but they're a lot of gaps. Then winter interrupts the bliss of the wind in my hair and the bugs on my teeth

Bottom line, I need an apartment near a grocery store, bus stop, preferably on the first floor or the building has an elevator, it has to have secure storage for my bicycles, air conditioning and there are probably some other things I'm not thinking about.

When I think of the neighborhood that would fill my needs two come to mind. Downer Ave and the area around the lower east side near Metro Mart.

My budget for rent (approximately 1/3 of my income) is $600 - $700 per month.

I was trying to balance the decision of where to live. This next stage in my life is probably the last stage and I want to make it count. Clearly, I can live in either Appleton or Milwaukee. My life would be different depending on my choice, but it wouldn't be terrible in either case. There are personal reasons why I would prefer Milwaukee. I'm not going into them. Let's just say the happiest time in my life were the years I spent  Milwaukee.

I'm going to come to Milwaukee next week. I want to investigate the housing market. I need a studio or one bedroom. My first look into both areas indicates there are affordable apartments that meet my needs in both of the area's I'm interested in.

If any of you know of a prospective housing option for me I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Oh yes, I would appreciate a couch to surf on while I'm there.

    Well... you know Downer Ave very well. It's not as accessible to everything as near Van Buren/Metro Mart for transportation. Near Van Buren you would be on The Hop line which might prove helpful. There are more services available near Van Buren for medical and food, although not all are in walking distance. But again, the Hop. Downer has a more intimate feel than Van Buren area, but less metro feel.

    I'll keep an eye/ear out for possibilities.

As we look forward to celebrating the Pride we have in our Gay population, (Yeah, I couldn't resist the pun.) A rustle in the hustings

I am trying to stay away from politics on my blog. I know that some of my intended readers do not share my feelings. As well, I don't entice dialogue. Occasionally my readers will address something I've written about. For the most part, they are merely saying something like, "Oh yeah, I felt that way too," regarding some experience, that I related. However, I have to share these particular feelings about the new Ryan Healthcare proposal that is sailing through the House of Representatives. Ring The Bell

 It appears there is a tradition in the radiology department at Ascension Hospital that patients, upon completing their course of treatment, ring a bell. ( We know not for whom this bell tolls.) Ring the Bell with My Sweetheart Jeanne. Jeanne drove me to all but two of the appointments. Pam Frautchi took me to the other two. Today, after being zapped thirty-two times, I rang the bell. This begins a roughly one-month recovery period where the effects of the radiation abate and, I'm assured, a return to normalcy occurs. In my case, I anticipate more energy and greater awareness.
