I've Made A Decision

Since Maria and are splitting up I have to relocate. Right now I have my old stand by buddies in the notorious Royal Older of Toads (ROT). My membership in the Expansion Band (2nd chair Harmonica) is still good. I write my theater and restaurant column for Appleton Monthly Magazine. My gym buddies, John and Jannet, are waiting for me to able to join them again.

My budget for an apartment is adequate for the Fox Valley. Transportation is a major problem since I no longer drive. Bus service is reasonably priced and the system is pretty good, but the frequency is not good. Crossing town with a transfer to another bus so I can make it to a Doctor's appointment is over an hour one way. The same trip in an Uber is 10-12 minutes. ($14.00 one way) I'm sure before the season is over I will be able to use my bike. Bike lanes are getting better, but they're a lot of gaps. Then winter interrupts the bliss of the wind in my hair and the bugs on my teeth

Bottom line, I need an apartment near a grocery store, bus stop, preferably on the first floor or the building has an elevator, it has to have secure storage for my bicycles, air conditioning and there are probably some other things I'm not thinking about.

When I think of the neighborhood that would fill my needs two come to mind. Downer Ave and the area around the lower east side near Metro Mart.

My budget for rent (approximately 1/3 of my income) is $600 - $700 per month.

I was trying to balance the decision of where to live. This next stage in my life is probably the last stage and I want to make it count. Clearly, I can live in either Appleton or Milwaukee. My life would be different depending on my choice, but it wouldn't be terrible in either case. There are personal reasons why I would prefer Milwaukee. I'm not going into them. Let's just say the happiest time in my life were the years I spent  Milwaukee.

I'm going to come to Milwaukee next week. I want to investigate the housing market. I need a studio or one bedroom. My first look into both areas indicates there are affordable apartments that meet my needs in both of the area's I'm interested in.

If any of you know of a prospective housing option for me I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Oh yes, I would appreciate a couch to surf on while I'm there.

    Well... you know Downer Ave very well. It's not as accessible to everything as near Van Buren/Metro Mart for transportation. Near Van Buren you would be on The Hop line which might prove helpful. There are more services available near Van Buren for medical and food, although not all are in walking distance. But again, the Hop. Downer has a more intimate feel than Van Buren area, but less metro feel.

    I'll keep an eye/ear out for possibilities.

It's time again.

It started in 2004 when we moved to our condo off Downer in Milwaukee. Then we mover to the Westside of Milwaukee when we rented from Ken Karr, the former landlord, now a current friend on Highland and 29th St. Then we moved to Mandeville Louisiana for a little less than a year. Returning to The Fox River Valley, we rented a home in Fox Crossing, formerly The Town of Menasha. When the tree fell on the roof, and the landlord felt no urgency to fix it, we moved to W. Latest News From The City On The Inland Sea

 Many of us in Milwaukee have put away the black armbands recognizing our grief for the Brewer's early exit from the playoffs. The Packers are going through their season, letting Jordan Love grow into the vacancy left by the departure of Aaron Rodgers. The Milwaukee Bucks are daring anyone to try and take this year's championship away from them. Marquette, UWM, and the Badgers have an abundance of hope. Marquette, however, has the talent. My Treatments We are at a checkpoint. Along with my immunotherapy next Monday, I'm having a scan. It's felt that my body has shed enough radiation so we can get a look at the infected area and evaluate the progress. Watch this space. I am feeling well.
